…by Douglas Adams.
Let me start off by saying this is a hard book to review. How do you review something without giving away too much and yet trying to make it sound sensible? This is the first book I am reading by the author and it’s a genre I don’t normally read. However, it was chosen as part of my book club resulting in me reading it.
Richard MacDuff is a software engineer who works for Gordon Way. At the same time, he is dating Gordon’s sister, Susan. Gordon Way is murdered and Richard is suspected due to some strange events. Consequently, Richard ends up finding an old acquaintance, Dirk Gently, who convinces him that his services are needed. Add a bit of time travel in it, an Electric Monk, a ghost who is attempting to possess most people, and an old professor, Reg, and you have one hell of a science fiction story!
I’ll admit that the book had me confused in many instances. But at the same time, with belief suspended, there were quite a few laugh out loud moments or at least moments where I found myself chuckling. It is a hard book to review for someone not into sci-fi as a genre generally. But I guess if you are into it, you should give this book a shot. If you’re not into sci-fi but looking at just reading, read this without too many expectations and you could have a laugh.
I give it a rating of 3.
Until next time,
