Author: Taslima Nasreen
It is the story of Nilajana,a young bengali from Kolkata who gets married to Kishanlal-living in Paris and is a restaurant owner. In his luxurious apartment at Paris, Nila feels that she has been caged and has not way to get out. Her marriage, where she functions as little more than a housekeeper and a sex object, is far from fulfilling.Meeting Indians and trying to being friends with them she realises that this is not what she wants for herself. Still trying to move out of the cage and discover her own life she meets Benoir Dupont, blue-eyed handsome Frenchman, and immediately falls in love with him. They start seeing each other often and Benoir introduces Nilanjana to the streets, the cafes and the art galleries of Paris-basically the life in Paris !
Her relationship with Benoir tells her this is the life she wants and starts weaving dreams of a life with Benoir. On the hand Benoir too leaves his wife and the kid and moves in with Nila.Everything is hanky-dory till the time when Nila realizes that Benoir’s first priority is himself and not the woman he loves, and that her need for him has ended. But her road to self-discovery has only just begun…
The plot revolves a lot around sexual exploitation-how a women in the foreign land is being wanted by the Indians too-knowing that she is lonely and has escaped her husband’s home. I just could not like this book.I mean,no ! The writing part is good but the storyline doesn’t give any positive energy or something conclusive at the end. Also Nila-as a woman- is shown totally confused and dependant in most parts of the book.
My rating for this book is 1.
